Many people come to the Eastern Algarve to bird watch as the Ria Formosa is the most important birding site in the Algarve. Covering 60km it comprises large areas of dunes and lagoons, channels and islands, saltpans, pools and river mouths. The diversity of habitat in the area means you can spot up to 50 species of birds in a morning from Greater Flamingoes to Eurasin spoonbills to Crested Coots.It is an area of great importance for a wide range of breeding, passage and wintering birds-hence it is a haven for the ornithologist.



There is an observatory located 7km north west of Tavira-Casa De Estudo Para Astronomia (CDEPA) was set up for astronomers and for families and friends to enjoy a visit to one of the best star sites in Europe. It offers a planetarium, Night Observations, Megalithic Astronomy, Introductory courses in Astronomy and Astrophotography. Coast/Beach:

The nearest beach is the Ila de Tavira-you can walk from the apartment to the riverside boat stop in 15 mins and there take the ferry to the beach.The bus station which is a 5 min walk from the apartment runs a bus to Quatro Aguas(QA) where you can also catch the ferry. If you have a car you can drive and there is plenty of parking at QA or you could drive to Pedras del Rei and take the mini train across to the beach at Barilla. There are plenty of restaurants/toilets at both beaches.



Travel:

Faro airport is 35km from Tavira-it is an easy drive via the A22 motorway and takes between 20-30 mins. If you are not hiring a car it is possible to arrange a private transfer costing approx 70euro return for 1- 4 people -ask for details. It is also possible to fly into Seville airport-from there the drive is 1½ hour all via motorway-it is nice to stay a night in Seville and see the sights and if you have kids visit the fantastic Isla Magica theme park which opens from 1100-2300 in high season.



Distances:

From the apartment you can walk to the Centre of Tavira in 10 mins along the river Gilao.There are several small fishing villages close to Tavira town-about a ten minute drive away is is the lovely village of Santa Lucia-it is the centre of the octopus fishing industry as seen by the heaps of earthenware pots on the quayside. There are numerous fish restaurants where you can choose from the days catch. The village of Cabanas has a new promenade and a craft fair in August which is worth a visit.



Further Details:

Tavira town has many shops, restaurants and bars to choose from. There is a daily market selling fresh friut, vegetables, meat and fish. There are several supermarkets in the town including Lidl and Aldi. There are restaurants for all tastes and budgets. There is a mini train which gives a tour of the town and can help to get your bearings-it departs from the riverside near the roman bridge.To get a 360 degree view of Tavira you can visit the camera obscura which is located in a disused water tower in the centre of the town-not to be missed it gives a real time view of the town.



For those interested in history there is plenty to keep you busy with a walking tour of the town to see the Roman bridge, the castle and the numerous churches.

If you have children with you a visit to a waterpark is a must and there are several to choose from- Aqua Show, The Big One, Slide and Splash are a few examples-they are all accessed very easily via the A22 in about 30-45mins-it is also possible to take a day trip coach there from Tavira. Zoo Marine is also worth a visit with dolphin and seal shows as well as water rides and 3 swimming pools to cool off in.There is also a beautiful carousel and other fun rides.



Further afield going towards Spain you can visit Vila Real San Antonio-this is a thriving town with an architecturally impressive pedestrian centre laid out like Lisbon's Baixa district. From here you can take boat trips up the Guadiana River.It is the 2nd longest river in Europe at 778km.



The Spanish town of Ayamonte is only 10km away-it can be reached by ferry from Vila Real or via a bridge from Portugal.
