I am probably remiss for not doing this sooner. I have been staying at Poggio D'Oro for the past 15 years and think of this place as my Italian home away from home. Marco, Andrea and the family have made us so welcome and nothing is too much trouble. Sitting on our veranda and overlooking the valley with a glass of Tuscan wine, sampling some amazing salami and cheese, with the only sounds being the flutter of wings and "Oh My God", silence and tranquility. Poggio D'Oro is perfectly situated, almost half way between Florence and Sienna and easily accessible to all the major tourist attractions. Marco is a wealth of information and pre booked for us things like the Ufizzi Gallery and the Academia which meant no standing in long queues.

This is the quintessential Tuscan retreat, you couldn't wish for a better or more central location with Florence, Siena, San Gimignano and Monteriggioni an easy 30/40mins drive away in case you are in need of some cultural distraction from the countryside and local vineyards For those days when getting in a car seems like too much effort the Poggio D'oro collection of villas offers a spacious pool area, as well as table tennis and tennis besides the ever present and ever changing vista of rolling hills and small Tuscan settlements. For local amenities, a short, slightly hilly, 15 minute walk into San Donato provides a few shops and gastronomic options like the Michelin listed restaurant 'La Toppa' for the local delicacy of Bistecca alla Fiorentina. Most importantly, Marco was an impeccable and ever cheerful host, providing great advice for day trip parking as well as humouring my attempt at speaking Italian despite flawless knowledge of English and German (and probably at least a decent comprehension of Chinese if that happens to be your mother tongue). After a few days you won't want to leave, or at least be planning your next visit.
