Fabulous place,loads 2do,even when its raining!!Good excersise climbing the 42 steps,reminded me of a film,although im sure that was only 39 steps,lol!!!

avatar Solid roof!

And a pleasant place to stay all round, with very helpful owners. It rained most of the weekend we visited, so having a nice place to retreat to was good. The location might not be for all (steep driveway + 40 steps) but the reward is an excellent view of High Tor. The house has been imaginatively and thoughtfully renovated. Handily placed by the A6 for easy access to the local area.

Booked the cottage at short notice after reading reviews on Tripadvisor. Paul, the wonder was extremely accommodating of us. We weren't able to say for certain what day we would arrive owing yo work but this didn't seem to be a problem. Paul also let us check out a couple of hours late, which is always extremely helpful when you have a toddler (and we had lost an hour with the move to BST)! Before we got there, we mailed Paul many times with questions and he always responded promptly with a comprehensive reply. The cottage was a little difficult to find but this didn't cause us any anxiety or stress. A couple of times up and down the road and we worked out how to gain access. As the site illustrates, there are a lot of moderately steep steps up to the cottage but this was no problem for us or the little one. There was parking for the car. The cottage was as expected. Very, very clean, maintained to a high standard and tastefully decorated. The cottage has bags of character, and is decorated with lots of pretty and interesting nick-nacks. There was central heating and constant hot water. The cottage was lovely and warm with/without the heating on. The wi-fi worked perfectly well for the duration. The living room offers a fantastic view of the Tor and we were lucky to have great weather. There is a small television, a dvd player and some good DVDs so we watched a couple of films during one evening. There is no dining room but we ate at the table in the kitchen for all our meals. The kitchen was very cosy, perfect for a romantic dinner for two! Everything we needed in terms of appliances, cutlery, crockery was available. The downstairs loo was very handy especially with the toddler. The stairs to the first and second floor bathrooms are quite steep and I wouldn't have liked to have had to rush up or down them with the toddler. In this respect, a stairs gate would have been helpful and would have given us some peace of mind but we did find a way of blocking off the stairs at the top so we were able to relax upstairs without fear of our daughter injuring herself. The beds were not too soft for us, unlike others have said, they were quite comfortable. They did creak a little although this didn't disturb us too much. We had to take a travel cot for the toddler because there wasn't one available. Given the steep steps and stairs, it would have been good to have one provided but again, not too much of a problem, once it was up in the bedroom. The bed linen was pretty and high quality. There was no noise disturbance from the road at night. The bathroom and shower rooms were lovely. Lots of towels and nice complimentary toiletries. The view from the velux in the bathroom was great! Being quite small I was able to look out quite comfortably and appreciate the views. Matlock to the left of the cottage has plenty of shops including a good butcher and there's a supermarket. There are also lots of restaurants which I would have tried had we been staying longer. Matlock Bath to the right has pubs and tea shops, as well as lots of Fish and Chip shops. Both towns are within walking distance. If I returned again, I would consider going during the week, to escape the (literally) hundreds of bikers in Matlock Bath. I have nothing at all against bikers themselves but the noise from the bikes frightened my daughter and at times, it was so noisy in the town that we weren't able to chat as we walked. We took our daughter to Gulliver's Kingdom on Saturday and spent a good half day there. She loved it, so we were also happy. It's definitely not somewhere I'd have gone if we had not had our daughter with us but it bailed us out really, because Matlock Bath was so busy and noisy. Overall, we had a really great experience at the cottage we will almost certainly stay again. Even though we only stayed 2 nights, we felt as if we'd had a holiday! When we go again, we will go on the steam engine, which we saw just as we were leaving on the Sunday. Thanks to Paul (and Karen) for a lovely stay at Imladris!

We had a short weekend break at this cottage. It has been lovingly restored and although small, charming, comfortable and clean. Very comfortable bedrooms and lovely en suite bathroom and shower facilities. Wonderful view of the Tor. Note steep ascent to the cottage so not for the inactive!

avatar Beautiful location.

After an initial hiccup with double booking on our first day (which we have been told we will be compensated for). Everything after that turned out lovely. The cottage has everything you need, has great views and is perfectly located for Matlock Bath and Matlock. Just remember the steps at the end of a busy day...LOL!

avatar Very nice and excellent views

Very well maintained cottage with everything you could possibly need for a weeks holiday . We went with 2 children and they loved the cottage and the area as there was plenty to do in Matlock and the surrounding area.

avatar Hidden gem
Rating: (5) rate
Initially took a while to navigate ourselves to the property which is on top of a steep hill, and once we arrived we were very surprised. Beautifully restored cottage with all the mod-cons and beautiful views. We really enjoyed staying there. Bedrooms and bathrooms beautiful, especially the bathrooms! The cottage is very close to High Tor (visible from the front of the property), derwent and the Heights of Abraham. We also had a lovely day out just driving around exploring. The owners kindly had a basket full of leaflets with things to do locally, which came in handy. All of the local shops and pubs' were very friendly and welcoming. I would defiantly stay again if I was in the area.

avatar Perfect hideaway cottage.

The cottage is set way back from the busy A6, nestled away in the hillside overlooking the Derwent and High Tor cliffs. Our poor little Smart Car struggled to get up the windy steep drive, and the ascent up the stairs tests your fitness, but believe me- it's well worth it for this absolute gem of a place. It is immaculately presented, with lovely flagstone and parquet flooring, plenty of modern features and bags of character. Both the bedrooms are great, and the en-suite to the front bedroom is amazing- how the owner managed to get that bath all the way up there is a mystery! Absolutely everything you'd would ever need has been catered for here, from dishwasher to broadband to satellite television. Really cosy and welcoming, it was a shame to have to leave. Would not hesitate in returning or recommending to others.

avatar A pretty and cosy cottage.

A gorgeous cottage with a homely feel and stunning view. Very tastefully decorated and well equipped. Smelt clean and flowery too. The beds were extremely comfortable with luxurious bedding. My mum & I loved staying at Imladris. The steps up to the property are steep but fun. The stairs in the house are probably steeper & the the sloped bathroom ceilings were challenging for me as I am tall! The parking is tight, especially because we had two cars having come from different directions. All made for a fun holiday.

avatar Beautiful traditional cottage with an excellent view and location
Rating: (5) rate
We really enjoyed our stay in imladris, the cottage has been done to a beautiful and traditional standard, really clean and amazing views. It was lovely to sit outside watching the squirrels and wild birds whilst having breakfast. We would definitely stay here again and recommend to friends and family.

avatar Beautiful cottage, didn't want to come home.

From the moment you walk in this cottage all your needs have been catered for. Beautiful, clean and comfortable. The weather was not to good but we made the most of it. Wonderful walks and a very cosy fire. What more could you ask for. Great way to enjoy my birthday weekend. We will be visiting again hopefully. Thanks for letting us enjoy your beautiful cottage, so many wonderful touches. The driveway and the stairs might be an issue if your not to good on your legs and my 6foot fiancee did hit his head several times, but to be honest it was worth the bumps. Couldn't recommend Imaldris enough.

avatar Magical place to stay!
Rating: (5) rate
The cottage is in a stunning setting overlooking the Tor Hills. It was lovely to sit out on the terrace in the morning watching the sun rise or having a relaxing dinner. Our daughters aged 9 and 11 loved watching people climbing up Tor Hill. The cottage itself is well equipped, cosy and beautifully presented. It is only a 10min walk into Matlock Bath, so excellent for walks, going on a train, Gullivers Kingdom and Abrahams Heights. We enjoyed having an evening stroll to one of the many lovely bars. Would highly recommend this cottage, we didn't want to leave!

avatar Great homely little place!

We stayed as two couples in this lovely little home. Although compact, we found it had everything we could possibly need for a great weekend visiting the Peak District. Great location, and we lovely all the homely touches!

avatar Beautiful cottage, fantastic view!

Lovely little cottage. Decorated to a high standard with lots of lovely details. comfy beds, cozy fire and the attic bathroom is the perfect place to relax. The location is also great to get around matlock and well connected for the train. There is a bit of a steep climb up the cottage steps which would make it unsuitable for some people but this is clearly stated when booking. Fantastic!

avatar Love it

Had a short weekend break here and I have to say its amazing. The cottage is finished to highest standard, the whole place was immaculate and the view is fantastic. Planning our next visit already. Thanks

We stayed for two nights over the weekend. The cottage is lovely and was ideal for us as four adults both having a bathroom each. Although there is only parking for 1 car there is a small car park at the bottom on the main road which the second car can park free of charge and this was no problem. The cottage was spotless with all the amenities you need. There are a lot of steps up to the property so no good if you have mobility problems. It's in an ideal location having the choice of Matlock and Matlock Bath both within walking distance. Would definitely recommend the Indian restaurant in Matlock Bath! Have no hesitation in recommending this cottage. Thank you Paul & Karen for a great weekend.

We really enjoyed our trip here, the owner was really accommodating and was quick to reply to any queries we had. The location was great with some fab walks from the doorstep. I would highly recommend.

avatar 'very sorry'
Rating: (1) rate
Having stayed at Imladris twice before, I booked direct with the owner. He confirmed the booking, then cancelled it two days before our arrival: "Will I'm very sorry to say because trip advisor has taken over the booking they have double booked you and somebody else is in the cottage till the 30 th'. This left us high and dry and unable to find alternative accommodation at two days notice before a Bank Holiday weekend.

avatar Fabulous, fantastic, peaceful haven.

My self and a friend booked imladris for a two night much needed break, neither of us are in our prime, and we were both sporting different foot injuries and were travelling to Matlock bath on a train. We were given good clear instructions on all aspects of our stay by Paul and Karen (the owners) and they kindly let us use the property earlier than check in time as we had our cases to drop off. As described the drive is very steep, and winding, and there are many steps, 47 in total to patio, with a good firm handrail. Our first ascent with cases, and an eager anticipation of arrival left us oldies slightly breathless, not only with the climb but the stunning views, it was a glorious warm and sunny day, there were climbers on the high tor opposite and we sat on the patio to catch our breath and drink in our surroundings, its a pretty patio area with seating for four, and an pretty abundance of plants and bee attracting flowers. We accessed the property through the back door, which leads to the downstairs toilet/cloakroom and boot room which is bright and airy, due to the huge roof window, right from the moment you enter you can begin to appreciate that this cottage is well loved by the owners and its visitors. The restoration story is available in a book and is well worth a read. The door ahead leads to a loo and wash hand basin, and the door to your right leads into to the lovely kitchen, we loved the double butler sink, the cute settle and kitchen table and the array of pretty china, all electric appliances need switching on, we soon found the fridge in the pantry and had our provisions stored away, there were plentiful supplies of condiments, and even tea coffee sugar, we bought our own and left the remainder for the next guests. We also added to the condiments. The cottage is fully equipped, enabling home from home self catering. Nearest supermarket for supplies are Matlock, which has Sainsbury, M&S food, and Co-op, and maybe more, but we saw these three specifically. The cupboards have everything you'd need to prep and cook. Dishwasher built in and also a washer/dryer which all has liquids/tablet needed, we didn't use either of these appliances. The stairs lead off the kitchen, and ahead is the living room with its stunning (french) fire. The room is comfortably furnished, sofa and two comfy chairs-plenty of cushions and snuggly blankets, again the router needs switching on, (and off upon departure) should you require this facility. The view again from the living room is spectacular. The beautiful front door opens onto the terrace, with the view of the high tor. The wooden painted stairs are narrow and steep as with all traditional old cottages such as this, leading to a small landing the door to the left is the back double bedroom with a window over the side elevation, and down one step to the ensuite shower room, lovely hot powerful shower, side and roof window sink and loo, (very definitely do need a bath mat) it gets slippy, having read other reviews we used the hand towel to do this. The beds are very comfortable. Nice Linen's and quality bedding, Plenty of pillows throws and cushions on nice beds, and the furnishing are all in keeping with the cottage, lots of nice knicknacks, everywhere. The door to the right at the top of the stairs leads to the front double bedroom, again stunning views over the High tor, watching the sun come up over the tor was stunning, built in wardrobe and chest of drawers, with what I would have imagined being an over the stairs cupboard which has now been transformed into an attic bathroom, complete with claw footed roll top slipper bath, sink and the third loo. The view from the loo is high tor through the velux roof window. Subsequent trips up and down stairs in and out of the cottage get easier, once you have the measure of them, despite having a broken toe and a badly twisted ankle between us. We had our lunch on the terrace watching the world go by, and planned our afternoon, as we were slightly encumbered with walked we decided to make use of the plentiful stream of buses. There are bus stops (dale road) within in sight of the bottom of the drive, its £2.10 into Matlock, and free for senior bus pass holders, approx 4/5 mins. We took a trip to Matlock to have a look round, browse some of the many antique and secondhand shops and collect a few supplies. Matlock bath is lacking in supermarkets. In the boot room there is a huge basket of leaflets or what to do see and sample, there are books, games, dvd's tv etc we didn't use tv/dvd either. We enjoyed the peace and tranquility. Despite the rain on our last morning, it was lovely sitting in the living room with the door open watching and listening to the rain. Magical atmosphere with the low clouds. We entertained squirrels who raided the next door bird table, and even managed to meet the local Jay's we could hear squawking. The squirrels come early and they don't mind if you are sitting on the terrace, they come for breakfast. The Jay's come in for brunch! In essence the cottage is easily accessible if reliant upon public transport, rail and or bus, it's suitable for fit active walkers/cyclists/climbers/bird watchers/photographers and for us not so fit and active if we pace ourselves . We thoroughly enjoyed sharing a piece of Paul and Karen's second home, and we, as others before us, added to their unusual and quirky collection of possessions with a stoneware corked container we picked up on one of our forages round the local antique and secondhand shops. Which we felt fits right in with the decor, our way of saying thanks for sharing your splendid home with us for two nights. Would recommend and give 10/10 excellent

avatar Cosy cottage unsuitable for children or those with walking difficulties
Rating: (4) rate
Nice little cottage lovely bathrooms. However would have appreciated warning that the fridge would be off (it took ages to cool down). Also no bath mats (I would have brought some from home).. A large serving spoon for the kitchen would help too. The parking spot is only suitable for small family saloon. However we enjoyed our stay. The central heating was a boon at the beginning of the week. Recommendation below subject to above caveats

avatar Beautiful cottage with stunning views

We had a lovely stay at Imladris. The cottage is beautiful, so comfortable and in a great location. It was a lovely idea to have the photobook about the refurbishment of the cottage. We couldn't believe how the owners got the bath up all those steps and into the top bathroom! Imladris is perfectly located, a short walk into Matlock Bath for dinner. A good idea to take a torch with you for the return trip up the steps. We had a little difficulty finding it on our arrival - it was already dark and the ivy had grown over the house number on the wall. The steps seemed daunting that first night in the dark, but it was fine after that. The kitchen is well equipped, has pretty much anything you could want. Very pretty too. It's such a beautiful little place, would definitely consider staying there again. Bed very comfortable, slept to well.

avatar Beautiful views and fabulous home from home accommodation

Lovely short break in beautiful surroundings. Fabulous cottage a short stroll from Matlock Bath. Steep steps and stairs but highly recommend it.

avatar Nice walks but cottage not to our taste
Rating: (2) rate
We stayed for 3 nights in December. The cottage is in a good location for local walks from the door. The cottage was peaceful in the evening because the road below was not busy. There was a known issue with the heating which was frustrating but the owner drove over to attend to once we contacted him. Other than this the house was hot and we had constant hot water. We dislike clutter and were not impressed that every surface and wall is filled with 'stuff', some of it broken or worn out, most of it seemingly from the surplus of 2nd hand shops in the local area. The cottage is small and would benefit hugely from all of this junk being removed to feel more spacious and clean. As the daughter of a fireman I'm keen on fire safety. We noted there was no smoke alarm, fire extinguisher or fire blanket provided - smoke alarms are mandatory for cottage rentals. The front door does not open meaning the only means of exit is via the back door. The kitchen utensils left a lot to be desired. The pans were all very worn out and some had big rust marks on them. We ate out in the evening rather than use them. The glasses and utensils I did use all needed a wash before I was happy to work with them. I suspect they are given a cursory wash by occupants and the cleaning staff do not check that they are properly clean. The steps closest to the cottage are absolutely lethal. They are green with slime from being permanently damp and then this froze overnight. They need jet washing to make them safer. This cottage will appeal to some people more than others. It's not to my taste and I would not recommend it to my friends but the reviews would suggest that some people do love it.

avatar Amazing cottage with breathtaking views!

This was our second visit to Imladris and we loved it just as much as the first! The views are amazing, High Tor is opposite and it's extremely atmospheric. The cottage itself is beautifully renovated and contains quirky antique finds which sit well alongside the clean, rustic finish of the rooms. We loved the wood burner , with dragon motif and the second bathroom with a view of the stars! Imladris is the perfect place to spend a restful holiday , with gorgeous bedding and interesting antique items, combined with stunning views...sunset and High Tor is not to be missed!

avatar Quaint & cosy

This was the most beautifully decorated, well-cared for & well-equipped property I've seen for a long time. So much love, care, creativity & detail has gone into making an unforgettable experience...a real home from home. We were so lucky with the weather & were even able to breakfast outside & enjoy the wonderful view. The only negative point was the parking situation...takes some getting used to!

avatar Stunning views and picture-perfect cottage
Rating: (5) rate
We enjoyed our stay so very much. The cottage is renovated and decorated to every detail with love and attention. The views of the cliffs are amazing and having tea on the terrace looking at the view is fantastic. The kitchen is fully stocked for cooking, the washing/dryer was very helpful, and both bathrooms were like visiting a spa. We enjoyed being so close to the towns with shopping and antiques. Absolutely perfect holiday get away!
