Pico Bonito National Park
The most diverse park in Honduras, Pico Bonito covers an extension of land that goes from sea level to as high as 7,500 ft, and in effect boasts the largest change of altitude in Honduras. Named after the mountain that lies just south of La Ceiba, Pico Bonito has become a landmark for La Ceiba, and is will without doubt play an important role in making of La Ceiba an important eco tourism destination in the years to come. The area is also rich in bird life, with 198 different species (about 28% of the total bird species found in Honduras). There is also a rich variety of vegetation supporting the animal life, including primary forests, lush mangroves and different types of palm.
Cayos Cochinos
On a clear day, you can see, and almost touch Cayos Cochinos; the small islands are visible to the east-northeast of La Ceiba. Although from this particular viewpoint, what you see is one island, the reality is, that there are two islands as well as a series of smaller keys. Cayos Cochinos is National Marine Park in Honduras and is protected by law.
Cacao Lagoon
Located approximately 24 km. east of La Ceiba, on the highway that leads to Trujillo. This small oceanside lagoon is totally surrounded by mangrove forests, where a variety of tropical aquatic birds can be seen. In addition, there are 8 troops of monkeys that inhabit the area, of which some are howler monkeys and the others are white face monkeys.
Cangrejal River Rafting
Some of the best white water rafting in Central America is to be found right here in La Ceiba. The Cangrejal river offers class II, III and IV rapids, all within a short 25 minute drive from downtown La Ceiba.
Canopy Tours.
There are now two different Canopy tours operating in La Ceiba. The first is located on the banks of the Cangrejal River, only 7 km on a scenic dirt road from the Saopin Bridge over the Cangrejal River. The second Canopy Tour in the area is located in Sambo Creek, on the road towards Trujillo, a couple hundred yards past the entrance to Sambo Creek; on the mountain side of the road you will see the sign.

We just spent a fun, eventful Thanksgiving week in The Ceiba Tree Lodge at this amazing jungle resort! While we were there, the weather ranged from beautiful, to cloudy, to a major storm with fallen trees, and power outages. However, we could not imagine a better place to be "stuck" with a front row view of the rushing Rio Congrejal, the ever-growing El Bejuco waterfall, and some fun new friends in our fellow guests, as well as the warm, wonderful staff! Wilder got soaked through during the storm checking on us, delivering food and drinks, and then sticking around to play dominoes while the electricity was out for most of one day. The Ceiba Tree Lodge provided exactly the romantic treehouse adventure we had hoped after seeing photos and reviews here and on their website/blog. The grounds and landscaping were absolutely UNREAL! One caveat....If you are allergic, afraid, or simply not a fan of large dogs, you may want to pick a more "enclosed" lodge on the property. Ace (german shepherd), and Lucy (mastiff?) are VERY sweet and well-behaved. But the open-air kitchen and living area of Ceiba Tree seemed to be their preferred hang-out. We hope to return to the Villas again, and maybe share this indescribable corner of the world with some more friends and family on our next visit!

Richard and his staff made our trip unbelievable. The Ceiba tree was an amazing villa, with breathtaking views of a jungle waterfall, and right over the Rio Cangrejal. We made arrangements with a white water rafting company before we arrived, but had we known, Richard can arrange all sorts of excursions, including white water rafting, and he doesn't even charge for it. The company that actually handles the excursions were no more than a city block from the villas. Overall, an incredible trip and the villa and staff were amazing! Definitely will return and highly recommend this resort.

I would like to start by saying that Richard and his staff were amazing, the hiking trails were beautiful and the family and I had a wonderful time. I traveled with my husband and two children ages fourteen and twelve. At check in I was disappointed that there was not a TV in the room, just than my twelve year old son said “why would you want to sit in the room and watch TV, when we could go explore the grounds and play in the river, we watch enough TV at home.” On our four day, three night adventure we were able to go zip lining, white water rafting, hike in the Pico Bonito Rain Forest, visit the beach (which is just a 30 min. ride form the lodge) and visit the butterfly museum in La Ceiba. The room we stayed in had a full kitchen, when making my reservation it was vary important so I could buy food and make it, in order to save on money. The first night of our stay I treated the family to dinner at Pico Bonito restraint located next to the pool. The food was amazing, big props to the chef. I highly recommend staying at The Jungle Eco Resort and if I am ever to return that is were my family and I will be staying.

After hours of picking and choosing i finally stumbled upon Villas Pico Bonito from trip advisor and i must say it was the best choice for anyone looking to get away for a couple of nights or even a week (I chose the week stay), We stayed at the Cangrejal River Lodge cause we had 5 people in our party...Generally pictures are touched up and they sometimes never look like what they are supposed to be but this place was every bit of what you see in the photos...Located off a dirt road 4.5 miles from La Ceiba it takes you on a nice ride along the Rio Cangrejal....Be careful of that dirt road there are many man made speed bumps....A very nice place to stay with amazing scenery and beautiful POOL that is so blue it looks like the blue waters of the Carribean....The staff there is very friendly and always helpful if u have questions...A definite must stay place to get away from it all..

My husband and I and another couple enjoyed 5 wonderful days in the roomy Ceiba Tree Lodge. Richard and ana have created a beautiful place to stay. We have never had accomodations quite like it! Great birding, beautiful, expansive gardens, well cared for by a friendly staff. The kitchen is well-stocked with implements, and cooking there is great fun! Richard and ana are kind, helpful, and know how to get things done in Honduras. I highly recommend Villas Pico Bonito.

We just returned from two and half weeks in Honduras in august 2010. We spent four invigorating days in the Cangrejal River Lodge (Villas Pico Bonito). We had only planned on staying three days but couldn't pry ourselves away! Richard and his wife anna built the place and their love for it comes through in every detail. We opted to stay in the Ceiba Tree Lodge and would heartily recommend it. It is a masterpiece. It's like living in a comfortable tree house surrounded by the sights and sounds of the jungle but with all the comforts of home. We fell in love with the place immediately! The Ceiba Tree and the other lodges are scattered around a compound that is a botanical garden of tropical trees and flowers. There is also a crystal clear infinity pool set above the river and the rainforest beyond. We spent ample time in the pool as well as in the warm Rio Cangrejal flowing by below. After relaxing by the pool on our first day we hiked to the El Bejuco Waterfall and soaked in the spray of the sixty meter falls. The entrance to the trail is over a suspension bridge a short walk from the lodge. The next day we went rafting on the Rio Cangrejal, a trip that Richard helped us organize. That was a thrilling and beautiful ride that also included some cliff jumping. On our last full day we rode the local bus to a small town called Las Mangas and set off on another hike to the village of La Muralla and some fabulous swimming holes. Richard and anna are friendly and helpful hosts. Richard arranged transport for us from the Roatan ferry to his place and back to La Ceiba for our bus connection. We never missed not having our own transportation. Richard will offer advice or will help arrange adventures in the area, or you may just wish to stay close to the pool and soak up the atmosphere of this beautiful place.

My family and I stayed in the Ceiba Tree Lodge for 4 nights, and loved every minute. The staff was exceptional, the location was perfect (beautiful view of the Rio Cangrejal and the nearby waterfall, and only a 10 minute walk to great hiking trails), the food was delicious, the pool was beautiful and clean, and the host and his family (Richard, Ana, and Mildred) were gracious, kind and very sincerely wonderful people. Lucy was the most gentle, laid-back mastiff I have ever met - we all loved her. We are so glad we travelled out of La Ceiba to stay in this area, because the beauty of Pico Bonito National Park was worth the extra distance. Thanks to everyone at the eco resort!

What an amazing place! We had a terrific view of Pico Bonito from our balcony just above the pool. The infinity pool that drops over with a view of the Rio Cangrejal is a magical place from where we watched the sun set behind the mountains each day. The rooms are well appointed with beautful carved wood. I had the best night of sleep in my life! The outdoor kitchen was great to enjoy the natural surroundings and all the food and drinks from the restaurant were tasty. The grounds have gorgeous flowers and are well designed. Our kids loved the dogs Lexy and Ace who led us on our hike in Pico Bonito as well as the cat Bibi, turtles, frogs, and lizards that also enjoy Richard s place. Richard also set us up for white water rafting and river play which was truly a highlight of our vacation in Honduras. We highly recommend this special place at the base of Pico Bonito!
