We decided to book an apartment in Athens rather than a hotel to give the kids in our group (ages 10 and 11) a little more space. This roomy apartment is perfectly situated; bakery across the street, grocery just down the block, subway stop 2 blocks away. It's a very safe area. It was interesting and nice to be in an Athens neighborhood surrounded by locals rather than other tourists. Try to stay there on Saturday when the most amazing food market runs in the neighborhood. Block after block of fresh fish, olives, produce, nuts--it was unbelievable. The apartment comfortably slept four of us. There is a lovely balcony that goes all the way around the place and Sonia, the owner, is happy to help you with anything you'd like to do while in Greece. My only quibble is that the kitchen was a bit under-stocked for the cooking we wanted to do.

Although it is an old apartment in an old area, its location to attiki rail station (100 m) makes it easy to get to many locales. Across the road is an excellent bakery for fresh (6 am) bread. Sonia, the owner is very friendly, welcoming and very responsive. We spent a week in the apartment and were able to function freely and easily.
