Craigston Chapel, Craigston Estate, Carriacou,

CRAIGSTON CHAPEL. Craigston chapel was built in the 1930's , on the grounds of Craigston Great House….itself built in 1784….. to serve the Catholic community of the nearby village of Bogles. The story goes that the completed building was never consecrated, as plans changed, and over time the building was used as a store room and an animal pen….as a young boy growing up at Craigston I remember a flock of sheep being penned there at night and streaming out to pasture in the morning.
Having lost the roof in a long forgotten hurricane, it was refurbished as a cottage in 1968, and has recently (2015) undergone another up-grade and modernization.
The building has very thick stone walls……making for a cool interior…. in European Farmhouse style, and is essentially one room internally with a partition separating off the bedroom from the open-plan living, dining and kitchen areas. On each side of the building there are extensive verandas giving a choice of lounging space, either to avoid the sun as it moves overhead, or to catch the constant breezes on the Eastern side and the glorious sunsets over the Harbour on the Western side. .
Although built in the Great House grounds, which comprise 10 acres of landscaped gardens and orchards, Craigston Chapel is far enough from the main house for it to be completely private, and, although accessed through the main gate, has its own side drive and parking.
This is a very charming cottage, with all needed amenities including free WiFi and lovely views of the town and harbour. It is nestled against park-like mature trees on the Eastern side. The Chapel is cleaned weekly including a change of linen and towels. Beach towels and a local cell phone with $ 20 EC is provided as well.
This cottage is ideal for a couple, but could accommodate one other adult or child on a roll away bed if desired. There is a charge for this rollaway. The Chapel is within easy walking distance of the main town of Hillsborough and several beaches.
This is an ideal, historic and very affordable, location from which to explore and enjoy Carriacou.

The Chapel is located in the grounds of the Craigston Great House but far enough away from the main house to have privacy. Views from both of the spacious verandahs (Hillsborough at the front, tropical trees at the back). The Chapel was exceptionally well-equipped (microwave, blender, toaster) and having a full-size refrigerator with large freezer compartment was a real bonus. The bed linen and towels were good quality and changed regularly by the housekeeper Faithlyn who made sure we had everything we needed and checked regularly that we were happy. The Chapel was breezy and the thick walls (15") kept the Chapel pleasantly cool. Hillsborough was easily within walking distance although we never fully completed the journey on foot as the local minibuses are plentiful and cheap (XCD2.00 to the main bus terminal in town). Two beaches were in easy walking distance - Tom's Bay and Sparrow Bay. The nearby area of Bogles is also home to one of the best restaurants on the island - The Round House. We also spent several days diving with the (new) crew from Arawak Divers at Tyrell Bay and had a fabulous time. We will be booking the Chapel again!

Craigston chapel sits on top of a small hill. This provides a great view of the harbour and cool breezes blow up the hill and through the chapel. Sparrow Beach is about 15 minutes hike. You might see someone else on the beach. The chapel is very well supplied. The staff Faithlyn, Michael and Alden do a good job of looking out for you.

Set on a hill just below the owners' house, with a sea view, The Chapel is well equipped for 2 people. Having the housekeeper come in twice a week to clean and change the bedding/towels is great. On the number 11 bus route, you don't need a car to enjoy the island. There is a beach within easy walking distance too. The owners are friendly and helpful and we were invited up to the Great House to see the historic cellars and for drinks on the veranda. Trixie, the owners' dog, barks occasionally but is very friendly too.

We recently spent 2 weeks at Craigston Chapel . The Chapel was in such a beautiful setting that there really was nothing to disappoint. The view was perfect , the grounds of the Great House were a haven of peace . The cool breezes were very welcome . Verandah furniture was comfortable and there was always a perfect spot to relax either on the front or the back verandah . Accommodation was clean and tidy , no problems . Faithlyn kept a discreet eye on us and made sure all was well . The paw paw and Limes from the garden were an extra bonus. We would love to return .

Within a short bus ride of Hillsborough, Craigston Chapel provided us the independence and facilities we were looking for. Faithlyn popped in twice a week to tidy up, Michael the groundskeeper was also on hand if we had any questions and Trixie the dog kept us company most evenings but was well behaved and never begged! The island kept us entertained with fabulous snorkelling at Sandy Island, excellent food at Bogles Roundhouse and we swam with the green turtles at Tobago Cays; we couldn't have asked for more.

My husband and I had the pleasure of spending a week in the Chapel over the 4th of July. This property is a hidden gem on Carriacou! The view is absolutely breathtaking!! The property is well maintained, the gardens were stunning - and laying in the hammock drinking coffee in the morning was a real treat. For anyone visiting, I highly recommend taking a few minutes to talk to Faitlyn, the house keeper. She is knowledgeable about the island, what to do, and how to do it at the lowest cost. She is also a generally wonderful person. Communication was easy, the owners responsive and accommodating to our needs. We particularly appreciated the cell phone we were provided to use while on the island. The Chapel is in a centralized location between the beaches of Hillsboro and one of the best restaurants on the island, the Bogels Roundhouse. You can either walk or it is easy to grab a ride anywhere. We chose to walk and really enjoyed interacting with the locals. I would absolutely recommend a stay at the Chapel to anyone wanting a quiet location with beautiful views. It was a once in a life time experience and I can personally guarantee you would enjoy your time there. I would like to extend a special thanks to the owner Hazel and her staff. You all ensured we had a wonderful time. Thank you.

The Chapel villa at Craigston Estate is much more than a wonderful place to stay on a beautiful island in the Caribbean -- though it is certainly that. It is a unique opportunity to experience the island, its history and extraordinary beauty. The chapel was originally built as exactly that, but is now a lovely, fully equipped villa with tonnes of charm. It is also in a gorgeous setting and has multiple outdoor spaces to relax in the sun (or shade). There are two beaches within walking distance. If you're lucky, Trevor Kent will introduce you to his friendly neighbours you're liable to meet there. The estate has been in the Kent family for three generations and Trevor and Hazel entertained my wife and I with fascinating stories and information. It was a pleasure to get to know Faithlynn, the housekeeper, a little bit as well. Our two weeks at the Chapel this January were a special time we'll never forget. We were left dreaming, fancifully, of coming back with friends to stay in the Great House! Thank you all.

We have just spent an idyllic month at Craigston Chapel . Our second visit . As a place to relax with great views both from the front and the back terrace there’s always the perfect spot with the exact amount of breeze for comfortable Lotus eating . We enjoyed our evening with Trevor on the verandah of the Great House . He filled us in with many stories of his family going back into the cotton , lime and livestock eras . Faithlyn was quietly attentive as always but a ready source of island information when needed . We have walked and explored many paths and beaches , but still More to find . The Chapel is simple , cool and has everything one would need for a trouble free holiday . Mosquitoes generally not a problem but the new rectangular net over the bed gave us extra reassurance while sleeping. There is always a breeze through the building so the nights are comfortable . We will certainly endeavour to return .

My wife and I spent a lovely week enjoying the tranquility and peace of this lovely estate property. The Chapel is perfectly located to take advantage of the wonderful breezes and the gorgeous views out over the Caribbean. The Craigston Estate is conveniently located just outside Hillsborough, and the moment you pass through the property's gates and drive up the palm and flower-lined drive, you know you've entered a special place. Faithlyn was waiting for us upon arrival (despite our delay in doing so as a result of a late flight) and helped us settle in with some wonderful produce from the estate (limes, marmalade, and lime juice for the Kent family rum punch recipe!). She also explained the estate's fascinating history (originally a fortress). Like everyone we encountered on Carriacou, Faithlyn was friendly and extraordinarily helpful. We would recommend this spot to anyone seeking a relaxing and enjoyable get-away.

This was our third winter break at Craigston Chapel, Carriacou . A perfect spot to relax . The Chapel is situated on a hill outside the small town of Hillsborough , has great views from both the front and back terraces and the 10 acre estate is quiet and tranquil , with a lovely short stroll to the top of the hill to witness a 360 degree view ,a very beautiful view it is too ! A constant breeze and always somewhere to relax in the shade . The chapel is very simple but comfortable with plenty of outdoor furniture to relax on and all the necessities for a self catering stay. The nearest beach (usually empty and good for swimming ) is around 15 minutes walk away. A mere 20 minute walk takes you down to Hillsborough where one is able to find shops , simple restaurants and beach bars . We would not hesitate to return whenever we can.
