Best Diving / Snorkeling on Southshore Roatan

Far Tortuga is located mid-island on the south side of Roatan approximately 20 minutes from the airport and 10 minutes from French Harbour. It is a secluded, oceanfront home, comfortable for up to 9 people, in the small community known as First Bight.
The house features a modern kitchen with all conveniences: granite countertops, gas cooktop, wall oven, disposal, dishwasher, microwave, coffee-grinder and coffee-maker, toaster oven, food processor, blender, etc. The tiled living room, kitchen, and dining areas are large and airy and feel even more spacious because of the stunning vaulted wood cupola ceiling and the massive wood French doors that face the ocean. These doors all catch the ocean breezes and beckon visitors to barbeque on the gas grill or just relax and watch the sunset from over 2000 square feet of decks and gazebos. There is an infinity pool that overlooks the ocean and the stone patios and benches surrounding it are perfect for sunbathing. All 3 bedrooms have vaulted ceilings, louvered windows, ceiling and floor fans, hardwood floors, luxury linens, and the two largest bedrooms have their own oceanview decks. Our master bedroom is very privately situated in its own wing and includes a queen bed , a huge master bathroom with 2 vanity sinks and a walk-in shower. The other two bedrooms share a full bath . One room contains a bunkbed and an extra long twin and the other bedroom has a queen bed. There is a very comfortable sofabed in the living room and a queen-size aero-bed if you want to sleep under the stars in one of the gazebos.
The turquoise waters of the Caribbean are steps away from the house across the Ironshore. In addition, there is always easy access through the community dock a short walk away in First Bight or at the community beach a few doors down from the house. 3 kayaks are also available for your pleasure.
Some of the best wall diving on Roatan is a short swim or kayak away in front of this house where the snorkeling is also excellent. For less adventurous guests, we suggest lazing in the pool or on the covered porches watching for dolphins or enjoying the many hummingbirds that visit the feeders and hibiscus blooms surrounding the decks.
On arrival at Roatan Airport or the Ferry Terminal our Property Managers will be on hand to help you pick up your rental vehicle (highly recommended) and then escort you to the house.Come stay at Far Tortuga - we know that you'll be glad you did!

This review is long overdue. I stayed in Far Tortuga with my husband and another couple for a week last February. We stayed in a more populated part of the island the previous week, it was a nice change to get away from it all and stay in a quiet and remote location. The kitchen was completely stocked with anything (and much more) than we needed. The beds were comfortable, the bathroom well stocked with towels, and a closet full of extra sheets and plenty of beach towels. This home does not have air conditioning, but it doesn't need it with the wonderful ocean breezes and the fans. The property managers, Kevin & Claire, couldn't have been more kind and accomodating. It was nice to know they were only a phone call away if we needed anything. And Kevin popped in every couple of days to take away our trash, check in on us, and tell us a funny story or two. There is a security guard who watches over the neighborhood. I don't know if he sees much 'action', but it was nice to know someone was looking out for us. There is also an alarm system in the house. The pool is small, but it was the perfect size for four, we never felt crowded. It's perched above the iron shore, a perfect spot for an afternoon cocktail while tossing the iguanas fruit and watching the dive boats go by. We spent most of our time in the pool or on the deck, what an amazing view! If you're a diver, Barefoot divers are a short drive away. My husband dove with them every day and raved about his experiences with them. We didn't snorkel in the ocean in front of the house because the sea was too rough every day of our stay. My friend did snorkel in the bight but was later told by Kevin that there are crocodiles in there. I don't know if they're a big threat to snorkelers, but be aware that they're in there. The house is far from West End/West Bay, but it was much closer to the Iguana farm, Pirate's of the Caribbean zip lines, Oak Ridge, Jonesville, Camp Bay, and Punta Gorda. The nearest supermarket was just a short drive into town. You need to rent a vehicle with this home, and I can't imagine not having four wheel drive. Every glowing review left before me is true, every amenity and description left by the owner is as well. Far Tortuga is beautiful property, but more importantly, it felt like a home. Thank you, Anne, Kevin, & Claire, for a wonderful week in a lovely home!

There is no option for Family with young adults. We traveled with our 3 adult children and friend for a total of 6. The house comfortably slept 6 and I am not sure where the 4th bedroom is..... there are only 3 bedrooms at this house. Bedroom #3 is quite small for two adults but worked fine for our family. The master bedroom is huge - there is room for an extra bed. All comments are spot on so I won't repeat what has already been stated. The managers, Kevin and Claire are very helpful and available when needed. The "neighborhood" is quite friendly and we were all invited to a home restaurant where we dined with a small group other travelers and local expats. It was unique and very interesting! I will give a few cautions... If you love to walk to local amenities, this house is NOT for you. You can walk in the neighborhood but that is it. You will need a vehicle and 4 wheel drive is a must on the island if you plan to explore. There are few beaches on this part of the island. The shore in front of the house is lined with, what I believe they called iron coral, which is very jagged and sharp. Beautiful but difficult, if not impossible, to walk on. Every day there were scuba excursion boats anchored in front of the house so this is an ideal location for experienced snorkelers or scuba divers. I would not recommend snorkeling in this area for children or inexperienced snorkelers as getting out of the water was quite a challenge with the sharp coral and there are few spots in front of the house where it is safe to get in and out. We snorkeled from the dock, around the point and past the house to a clearing where your can find a path through the coral to the small rocky beach. This is not a swimming beach. See pictures for distance. You can not touch the bottom while snorkeling this route so take precautions. The waters were a bit rough when we were there so it might be quite different during other times of the year. The snorkeling is spectacular though and our neighbors went scuba diving every day. The "wall" is maybe 100 yards off shore right in front of the house. Kevin was very helpful with advise on snorkeling. If you like a relaxed quiet vacation, this house is for you! If you are experienced scuba divers, you will LOVE it here! If you need constant action or an accessible beach, you may want to search elsewhere. However, where there are beautiful beaches, there are also lots of people when the cruise ships are in, which is almost daily now. We would go to the beaches on days when there were few or no cruise ships. You can check the calendar to see who is in and for how long. We LOVED the house and couldn't believe everything provided. I don't believe there was a thing that we needed from kitchen utensils, games, kayaks, beach towels, extra linen... it felt like we were permanently moved in!

A very beautiful home with wonderful decks to sit and enjoy the ocean. The pool was great for those hot, humid days. The property managers were extremely helpful showing us to the property and providing information about the island. The kitchen has everything you need to make a meal but many great restuarants are close by too. There is great diving and snorkling right off the property.

How does one describe Paradise? Two words~Far Tortuga! We spent 10 fascinating &adventurous; days at this lovely home above the coral reefs & Caribbean, watching hummingbirds & iguanas, luxuriating in the Infinity Pool, feeling warm trade winds & enjoying the overwhelming amenities this home provides. The beautifully appointed kitchen, spacious living area w/ ocean view, & lanai, master bedroom w/ sliding door providing views of the ocean,& the private, yet secure location made us never want to leave! We snorkled & kayaked from the First Bight lagoon &off; the coral outcrops below the deck, in waters abounding w/Caribbean sealife. We were almost content to just repose in the pool, but adventure beckoned & we toured West End/ West Bay~main tourist & diving areas,w/Jimmy Buffet atmosphere. Our favorite was the east end, less developed & quieter. We stopped to visit BJ at at Bj's Backyard restaurant/bar in the picturesque town of Oak Ridge, chatted w/friendly folks in the Garifuna village of Punta Gorda, & loved dining at La Sirena (The asylum), locally called Jimmy's, in Camp Bay. Eating lobster & grouper on a deck over the Caribbean while watching sea turtles swim below & the exquisite Honduran sunset was the best birthday ever!!. We met wonderful folks 0n our Far Tortuga stay, from local islanders born on Roatan to american exPatriots & of other nationalities who now make this island their home. Be sure to visit Butch &Sherry; Wade @the Bulk Gourmet in French Harbour for wonderful speciality foods & wine, &much; more. Far Tortuga is a treasure we want to certainly return to for our next visit to Roatan. We will certainly include Scuba Diving then, as Roatan is the premier dive spot on the 2nd largest barrier reef in the world. . Truly a Caribbean Paradise & beyond even the accurate listing description. Far Tortuga is the vacation home of your dreams on Roatan. Thank you Karl & Anne for making this lifestyle dream a reality for us!

All of the previous reviews are dead-on. My husband and I stayed here for 10 days for our belated honeymoon. Two friends joined us for part of our stay. It was just the perfect spot. Although there are many amazing things to do in Roatan, our most enjoyable times were simply relaxing in First Bight! We snorkeled right in front of the house, used to kayaks to cruise around and do a little fly fishing, cooked fresh seafood meals every night, and relaxed by the pool and just enjoyed the scenary. Looking at the pictures on this website bring back wonderful memories, and we are counting down the days until we can return. Kevin and Claire, the property managers, were simply wonderful. They truly make traveling to another country stress-free. Kevin, Claire, and the owners go above and beyond to make sure that all of your needs are met and that your vacation is perfect. We will be back to Roatan and we will be staying here when we return.

We would absolutely recommend Far Tortuga. We totally agree with everything in the other reviews. We would like to add comments re the beautiful well equipped kitchen, the original artwork, the high quality furnishings, comfortable deck furniture, comfortable mattresses and lovely bedding. We bought fresh lobster and fish right at the dock and were given instructions on how to cook it. Snorkelling right in front of the house and the beautiful infinity pool for cooling off were real assets. We also enjoyed the outdoor showers after snorkelling. Another big plus was the complete privacy. There is nothing missing to make this one of the best vacation spots ever

Far Tortuga is absolutely beautiful and this property is in a great location. Very relaxing to be right on the ocean and able to overlook the waves while sitting in the pool and cooling off. The house itself has a great layout and is equipped with everything you need to feel at home and then some. The wraparound decks are wonderful to sit in the sun or just relax with a beverage, or snooze in a hammock while listening to the waves beside you. The snorkelling, directly in front of the house, was amazing!!! The property managers, Kevin & Claire, were extremely friendly and helpful. They met us at the airport, guided us directly to the house, and provided some helpful insider tips on island life and various restaurants and activities which allowed us to jump right into our vacation. Having access to a cell phone and the internet were very convenient and helped in our planning of activities for the week as well as keeping in touch with home. Roatan is a paradise and we would go back to this house in a flash! Definitely give this property the highest recommendation.

We had a very pleasant and relaxing time at Far Tortuga. Anne, the owner, was very friendly and provided us with a lot of useful information prior to our arrival, and Claire and Kevin welcomed us to Roatan and were very helpful. The House is lovely, with beautiful views and only steps away from the dock at First Bight, where you can launch the Canoe or inflatable row boat available at the house. Especially pleasant early morning or in the evening. We highly recommend bringing snorkeling gear, or renting it for $5 nearby at Turquoise Bay. You can spend many wonderful hours in the water this way - just remember to put on sun block (there's plenty in the house in case you forget...). The one thing to remember, is that you need to rent a car for your stay if you want easy access to the house and other attractions on the island. Clair and Kevin can help there as well.
