Lisa has created a desert oasis just minutes from the downtown Plaza. It is charming, beautiful, interesting and welcoming. We stayed in the Sun Room, which was perfect for the two of us. While the accommodations were lovely, comfortable and interesting, the gardens were works of art. Look for the whimsy and fun. The totems that decorate the diverse spread of landscaping are worth a walk around the place. Watch for the gnome vs dinosaur throw down. We recommend Lisa's Suitable Digs to all travelers.

My husband and I had an wonderful stay at sustainable digs...Lisa is a gracious host and we truly feel like we have found a home away from home. She provided invaluable insights as to the sights, trails and local dining recommendations. The interiors of the rental spaces are thoughtful and very comfortable and put us at ease. Beautiful views, hiking trails, and Lisa's lovely gardens all create a unique and inviting retreat. The property is very convenient to the plaza, yet you have the feeling that you are miles and miles away from the city. We arrived planning to stay for two nights and had such a great experience there that we changed our travel plans to extend our stay. We have recommended Lisa's place several times over to family and dear friends. We cannot wait to return for our next visit!

Suitable Digs is a swell place to stay in Santa Fe, NM. The B&B;, conveniently located approximately 3.5 miles from downtown Santa Fe, is beautifully designed and the indigenous landscaping is lovely. The Sun Room, with its generous natural light during the daytime and vintage-looking stove heater that's perfect for nippy evenings, invites weary travels a cozy place for a respite.

avatar Sun Room, a sunny, spacious, self-contained home away from home!

My husband and I have stayed at Suitable Digs on four different occasions. The last two visits we stayed in the Sun Room. We love everything about staying at Suitable Digs and I believe the Sun Room is my favorite "suite". On each stay we were there for 8 nights. The fully equiped kitchen allows us to have breakfast at "home" and lunch and dinner as well, when we do not want to try one of Santa Fe's excellent restaurants. The separation of a "living area" allows for bringing friends in for a visit and have places to sit other than on the bed. The room really is configured very comfortably for an extended stay. The grounds of Suitable Digs are beautiful and fun to explore and we can't wait for each visit to discover what new Green feature Lisa has added to the property. It is her attention to her guests and the accomodations, and her love for the property that makes staying with Lisa such fun. We hope we never have to stay anywhere else when we visit Santa Fe.

avatar Highly Reccomended!!!

My husband and I stayed at Suitable Digs in august of 2011 and our only disappointment was not arranging to stay longer! Lisa is genuinely so very friendly and quite knowledgeable about the Santa Fe area. The eclectic style of her unique home is warm, inviting, and offers a secluded and private feel in an area that is very convenient to a multitude of desirable locations. Accommodations are very clean, comfortable, and tranquil. As hikers we especially loved the coming home and relaxing with a bottle of wine in the common area while watching the sun go down behind the distant mountainous views or walking through the garden with a cup of coffee in the early morning taking in the artistic splendors which Lisa has created with her own hands and have to be seen with your own eyes to appreciate. This is indisputably the best place to stay in Santa Fe!

avatar Found Our Second Home

Loving Santa Fe as we do, my husband and I came to visit with the intention of looking at homes for purchase. We ended our week long search with the realization that we found our second home at Suitable Digs. This eco-friendly establishment has all the comforts of home and Lisa does a fabulous job at running the place.

avatar A great unique place to stay in Santa Fe

I stayed here during a workshop for my MCS (multiple chemical sensitivity). It was just what I needed. No harsh chemicals and a green environment. Lisa recommended awesome places to eat and did whatever she could to make my stay pleasant. Highly recommended.

A most interesting place, well tucked away! Every room we saw was warm and cosy, with the most interesting of knick-knacks. It will be where we stay when we go back to Santa Fe.

avatar Great week at Suitable Digs

We spent a week at Lisa's terrific and "green" compound in Sant Fe. Her digs are more than suitable, they are super! Lisa's place is virtually self sustaining; solar panels produce 100 percent of her electrical needs, roof rainwater is is collected and piped to storage tanks, and gardens produce a vast array of veggies (ask Lisa for the garden tour). Our week in the colorful and artistically decorated Sun Room was very comfortable thanks to all the thoughtful appointments including a reusable shopping bag for grocery shopping, all the utensils and cooking gear, a large collection of movies to borrow, colorful furnishings, and attractive outdoor seating area. Suitable Digs has a rural feel but is well located for everything you would want to do in the area. Lisa is a wonderful hostess and a great local resource (directions, where to eat, what to see, what to do, etc). We hope to come back.

avatar Unique and delightful lodging

Suitable Digs is beautifully landscaped, uniquely decorated and committed to environmentally friendly practices. We stayed in the Sun Room, which has a kitchen complete with table looking out into the lovely garden and patio area. Lisa is a delightful and relaxed hostess with a magical vegetable garden. The room was very comfortable and homey.

What a lovely couple days. Lisa was so friendly and helpful...just a lovely hostess. Her attention to detail in each of her little condos is truly amazing. Everything is put together with TLC. The bed was so comfy and the little fireplace made it so cosy. The windows all open to let in the fresh air and the singing of the birds. Lisa's love of nature is evident in her gardens, both vegetable and flower ,as well as her recycling ethic, There are grounds and trails to explore and sunsets to watch, while you immerse yourself in the outdoors, but are but a short drive to town. We would've liked a bigger TV as we're Canadian Hockey Fans.We do plan on returning !

avatar Outstanding accommodations -- and a fascinating experience!

A recent trip to Santa Fe allowed us the good fortune to stay at Suitable Digs, which, simply put, is one of the most charming and tranquil places I've ever experienced. The Digs' owner, Lisa, has created an oasis of (nearly literal) off-the-grid living, demonstrating that environmentally-conscious accommodations are not only possible and practical, but provide a vastly richer experience for the traveler. While located only a few miles from Santa Fe's historic central Plaza, it feels even farther removed from the city's crowds than it actually is - its sole access is by means of a bumpy county road, enhancing the impression of remoteness and serenity of the place - yet Suitable Digs is within easy reach of restaurants, stores, and the city's many attractions. Every inch of Suitable Digs bears Lisa's thoughtful (and whimsical) touch; her efforts in creating this remarkable, self-sustainable place are visionary and almost miraculous. (Be sure to ask Lisa for a tour of the property, and if possible of her lovingly restored 1948 Spartan trailer - a marvel of restoration and a testament to her dedication!) Lisa herself - a wonderful, warm, knowledgeable person - is a kind, gracious host who was endlessly patient with our many questions (and requests for directions, and frantic calls about late arrival, mislaid keys, etc.); her generous suggestions and advice greatly enhanced our visit. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the memorable experience of staying at "green” accommodations (my first time), which has only inspired us to implement more self-sustainable practices within our own home. Suitable Digs is so much more than simply suitable; it's a beautiful, unique alternative to yet another chain hotel, and an exceptionally inviting, relaxing - and perhaps even enriching - choice in accommodations.

I have stayed at Suitable Digs several times over the last eight years and have thoroughly enjoyed every experience. It has been particularly interesting to watch as Lisa has fine tuned the gardens and grounds of the property and implemented the newest green technology. Each time I feel like I have learned something new about sustainable living to take back to my life at home. Lisa herself is a fabulous hostess and takes a personal interest in each and every person that stays at Suitable Digs. I highly recommend Lisa and Suitable Digs as a wonderful addition to any trip to Santa Fe.

avatar Suitable Digs: a place of serene beauty, artfulness and comfort

I truely enjoyed my stay in Santa Fe at Suitable Digs due to the lovely views from my room, the sound of coyotes at night, the ability to hike and take photos on the land, and the creative furnishings and naturally designed landscapes. The accommodation was also very comfortable and inviting and Lisa is a helpful and welcoming host. This place is obviously her labor of love. Check it out and you will understand what I mean. I would not hesitate to recommend this place to my closet friends.

This is a wonderful place ! The owner has a great feel for design and this is reflected in all the details on her compound. It is also nice that she has a good amount of land on the property that is accessible to visitors. We were in Santa Fe to oversee the last part of construction on a house we were having built... so we stayed here for a month. It was great... just perfect ! Also, the owner is a great source of information on the best restaurants, interesting things to see and do in Santa Fe. She gives the real scoop!

I always stay at Suitable Digs when in Santa Fe! Lisa is a completely conscientious and caring host. All of the rooms and apartments at Suitable Digs offer beauty and comfort with endless details of thoughtfulness and whimsy as well as opening onto the carefully tended out of doors. I love going outside to visit the lush gardens, sweet paths and sitting areas, mountain views and an arbor with grand table for dining, chatting or sipping a glass of wine at sunset. Lisa's care extends to environmental awareness, as well, with solar electricity, water catchment, all biodegradable household products and natural materials. Caring attention seems the overriding result of what is offered at Suitable Digs.

avatar More than suitable/fantastic!

Suitable Digs is the best place I've stayed in Santa Fe. It's perfectly located on beautifully landscaped property only three miles from the town square, yet feels as if it's out in the country. The apartments are attractively furnished and decorated. Each one is unique, with art and delightul whimsical touches. I love having a kitchen, so that some evenings we can cook and eat outside under the lovely grape arbor overlooking the mountains. How many places offer you fresh organic herbs from the garden? The owner is friendly and does a great job of seeing that your needs are taken care of. We visit Santa Fe often, and Suitable Digs will always be our home away from home.

Living in Sweden, where environmental issues are extremely important, I chose suitable digs for my stay in Santa Fé. Location suited me very well, and Lisa waited-up for me, until 1am, when I finally arrived at her door-step after a 25 hour journey. I felt more like a member of her family, than a guest. Lisa is firmly committed to make a difference providing lodging experiences that are far above the average hotel or apartment stays. The apartment was equipped with everything I needed - no plastic shopping bags are allowed - Lisa provides special ones. There were instructions for shopping, entertainment, sight seeing - excursions - I was never bored during my 4 week stay. We had interesting conversations - Lisa made me feel at home, and answered a million questions, introduced me to several friends and neighbors. I had several plans for returning - however, circumstances made me postpone my plans. I would only stay at Suitable Digs - and I rather change my travel plans to suit the vacancy.

Lisa is a wonderful host and her gardens made us feel a sense of child hood wonder as we walked around enjoying all the fruits of so much labor and creativity! From the first night eating at the outdoor table with a magnificent view of the mountains to the brisk swim in the natural rock pool, we took it all in.

My wife and I stumbled across Suitable Digs as we were looking for a place to stay that wasn't a hotel room. We couldn't have found a more suitable place! What the proprietor has done on her little chunk of land in the desert is nothing short of amazing. Suitable digs is a quiet, cozy, and inspirational retreat that we cannot recommend enough.

Lisa is a spectacular host, with lovely accommodations! We have been staying with her for several years now, and she sets a consistently high standard for lodging. Her rooms are super fun and comfortable, the style hip and eclectic. Many details and nuances make this a high value: extra water bottles for hiking, fresh fruit, french-press for coffee, complete kitchen utensils for eating in, and the grounds are lush with flower and vegetable gardens. All outbuildings are very private, and the location in general is super quiet, yet very close-in to town. She is highly personable and attentive to any additional requests. I cannot say enough about her and the high level of service/comfort of Suitable Digs

Lisa -- Just wanted to say thanks again -- and we really enjoyed staying with you. What amazing land and energy you have created ! We are still talking about it all, and Christie especially about the beautiful Olive trees you've raised, and the amazing vintage Airstream trailer we stayed in one night :-) Each of the rooms has their own unique magic and feel -- and each is a perfect complement to the wonderful spiritual and energetic vibrations of your land and all you've done to build and evolve Suitable Digs into a welcoming space outside of the norm, and into the realms of Sacred. But still with modern amenities and very easy access to Santa Fe and all that Northern New Mexico has to offer.

I came to Santa Fe to make art and found myself living in a work of art at Suitable Digs. Lisa Sarenduc, the proprietress and owner of this enchanted place, has created a lush comforting whimsical refuge in the desert sand; she extends hospitality with thoughtfulness and care. For instance, If you are planning a hike there are water bottles for your use, a soft insulated cooler to keep your sandwiches cool and an umbrella in the event of rain; for your morning coffee Lisa has provided an elegant French press. The flannel sheets, plush comforter and down pillows guarantee a perfect night's sleep and, if you ask Lisa, you will find that most of the furniture and cabinets have been custom-made for your lodging. My husband and I had a wood burning stove in our room that took off the chill from the high desert air. Pure unadulterated comfort on the inside. And on the outside there were gorgeous gardens on the cusp of growing figs and berries and there were fruit trees in full blossom and big tangled bushes of fragrant rosemary and in their growing season there will be flowers and vegetable and dozens of trees just newly planted. If you happen to be lucky enough to stay at Suitable Digs and don't feel like dining out at one of Santa Fe's many fabulous eating establishments, you can eat in and cook that locally sourced food you bought on Saturday at the Santa Fe's Farmers Market in a fully stocked kitchen complete with sharp knives, cork screws, pots and pans and wooden cutting boards. And you can eat it, weather permitting, under Lisa's pergola at her big outdoor table lit by a dozen globes of light under the stars. And, did i mention the swimming hole???? Suitable Digs is a magical place imagined and crafted by Lisa who has a magnificently wry sense of humor, an uncanny ability to anticipate the needs of her guests in all their manifestations and a deep tender generous heart. Suitable Digs is an oasis in the desert. Go.

Terrific place, but we stayed in the Bunkhouse. Heads up, it does have a composting toilet which is different but fine. The toilet has three steps up to it which was not a problem for us but might be for others.

Lisa is very hospitable and professional. When we stayed at Suitable Digs she was renting two of her other units as well. However, this created no problems. Lisa clearly has a strong environmental ethic as reflected in the construction of her rentals and her policies. The rough hewn and partly below-ground unit was accommodating and interestingly decorated. The bed was comfy and all was as we would have hoped. One minor concern is the tiny shower. I am 5'9" tall and the shower head came to about my nose. Additionally the shower itself was exceedingly tight space. All quite usable, but for some this may be problematic. We certainly enjoyed suitable digs and found the location to be great for exploring Santa Fe.

avatar Charming studio apartment in quiet natural area with easy drive downtown
Rating: (5) rate
I have to agree with the solidly good ratings this place gets. My young adult daughter and I stayed in the Sun Room for a week and found it to be very comfortable! We chose this location because we wanted a quiet place. We were concerned that it might be a little far from downtown Santa Fe. The location. however, turned out to be perfect. It was quiet and down a dirt road, which made us feel more like residents than tourists. We both slept well. We also were pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to get anywhere in Santa Fe from there. We joked that any tourist attraction or restaurant we were interested in was about 15 minutes away. There is no heavy traffic going into Santa Fe. The apartment has a notebook which lists and describes Lisa's recommended restaurants. It also gives directions to the Albertson's grocery stores, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, all (of course) within about a 15 minute drive. The grounds are fun to walk around and there are many enjoyably quirky things to look at, such as the original 1940s Spartan trailer, a vintage milk box on the front porch and a few cute statues. The gardens are pretty. The apartment is well stocked with dishes, pans and utensils. It included salt, pepper, vinegar and other condiments, as well as soap and shampoo. We liked that it was easy to compost and recycle. There are also a few New Mexico travel guides and a road atlas in the room, along with an assortment of novels. Both beds were comfortable. The shower was clean and worked well. The patio area is shared by the Sun Room, Earth Room and the Bunkhouse. These three residences are far enough apart and have thick walls, so we didn't hear noise from anyone else. There is plenty of outdoor seating there and also a dining room sized table in a pretty garden area of the back yard. A few details for people seriously considering staying here: 1) I wasn't sure from the pictures if this was a one bedroom apartment or a studio. There is no separate bedroom. The large bed is a foot or two behind the couch. However, that worked fine for us; 2) The road leading up to Suitable Digs is a dirt road. I'm a wimpy driver, so I wouldn't have been comfortable driving on it after dark on our first day. After the first day, however, I realized it really was very easy to drive, even at night and even with an economy car. My car got dusty though; 3) I had some problems with allergies the first night. Lisa was out of town, but she had someone come over and exchange the down pillows and comforter for a foam pillow and blankets, which took care of my problem. If you are allergic to feathers, I suggest being smarter than I was and just ask Lisa to switch them out before you arrive. We had a great trip and I would certainly stay here again. It feels a bit like home now.

avatar Accommodations - The Sun Room
Rating: (5) rate
I stayed in the Sun Room for four days. It is large, bright, is very comfortable and has a TV and other equipment. There are lots of pamphlets on things to see and do as well as magazines about the area. The cooking area has a complete set of dishes and all utensils and pots and pans needed to prepare meals. Another very helpful detail is there are condiments so one does not have to buy things like ketchup. Lisa has a wonderful knowledge of places to see and where to eat. In addition to the physical comforts of the room the grounds around the facility are wonderful to stroll around. One also can take walks out into the landscape. I highly recommend the Sun Room and the larger facility in general. The entrance is in the picture below as well as two people taking a walk in the landscape by the whole facility.
